7 days in Bulgaria, What to do, How much it costs

I am taking a 7 day trip in August. I will arrive in Sofia. Can somebody tell me what would be a good itinerary for that amount of time. What cities do you recommend? Also how much do you think I should Budget for Accomodations and Food and Attractions. I heard is very cheap. I probably would stay in budget hotels, but not as low as a hostel, I would like at least to have private room and bathroom. nothing fancy.

Should I rent a car, or should I use public transportation. . Is english a huge barrier to communicate?

I don%26#39;t know how much of a help I will be as I prefer staying at backpackers as you meet more interesting people, Last year I was paying around 40lev for a hotel room, the price didn%26#39;t reflect the quality as some were dumps %26amp; others were 5 star %26amp; everything in between.

Cars were for hire for 25 lev / day for a tidy but older opel vectra, I drove nearly 4000km over a lot of Bulgaria %26amp; it%26#39;s not for the faint hearted, they%26#39;re pretty crazy %26amp; the %26quot;b%26quot; roads can be rough %26amp; un marked, definitely risky for night driving as the gypsies don%26#39;t have head %26amp; tail lights on their horse %26amp; wagons. On saying that I%26#39;m glad I had a car because I got to see remote mountain villages in the South (Roudophe) lake Batak, Trigad gorge, Rila monestry.

Public transport is cheap, trains are slow %26amp; rickety, coaches are nice %26amp; quick with aircon.

The obvious cities are Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, Varna, Sozopol %26amp; there are other places of interest depending on what you like. My fav was the mountains down south near Greece (Rodophe) South of Plovdiv.
