Credit cards

Hi there, Going to Bulgaria (Sunny Beach) soon, will be taking plenty of spending money but thinking about taking my credit card (Mint) just incase - have 3 children so its just for extra piece of mind. Does anyone know if this is accepted?

Many thanks

|||

Shaz, Credit Cards are not widely accepted in Bulgaria. You can use them to book excursions with reps but I wouldn%26#39;t bank on them for shopping etc.

Toonman

|||

Ok thanks, was really just thinking about credit cards incase of an emergency, doctors/hospital etc (i have insurane but was just incase)

|||

I took my credit cards just for peace of mind but only used in shops in Varna - they are not accepted in most places - but should you have an emergency they are great to have as you can always get a cash advance on them. Used my cirus card in the cash machines for additional funds when necessary :)

Foreigners

Hi, i%26#39;m going to SB this Sunday, just me and two mates.

We were wondering, is there a lot of Brits, or are the foreigners in abundance too?

I like meeting people of all different cultures, so getting to know foreigners would be great.

Also, I know it might sound typical of a lad, but are there a lot of females at the clubs? lol

Dave, Falkirk

|||

Hi Dave. Short answer is yes, yes, and, er, yes.

Loadsa Brits in SB, also Swedes, Belgians, Dutch, Germans, Russians, French, a few Italians.

As for females, depends on the club, I suppose, some are more popular than others with the fairer sex.

Gaunyerselsboyz, you%26#39;ll have a great time. Where are you staying?

|||

Class, good to hear mate!

Staying at Bisser Apartments, looks like it%26#39;s right in the middle of SB really, which is all that I could ask for! :D

PS - good luck in %26quot;Europe%26quot; mate! ;)

Not stayed there my self but stayed in the hotel right next door.

It is at the very end of the %26quot;Strip%26quot; of hotels right on the beach in a really quite area. Although still within walking distance of the lively parts. Our hotel The feista beach has a really nice bar on the beach which is right next door to your hotel.

Our window in our room over looked your hotel and there weren%26#39;t many children about - seemed a very adult hotel.

advice please

has any1 been to santamarina holiday village? going with young baby and 2 young teenagers, whats the accommodation like and can you walk to the town from there. any other info would be gratefully recieved. thanks

|||

It is not convenient to walk to Sozopol. It is not far, but you need to walk on the curvy main road which could be dangerous.

|||

Hi Trisha, I ham out there in august as i have an apartment there. It really is excellent. There is cheap bus service into town run from the complex or you can take a taxi. the on site restaurant is good and is much better than the cheaper accommodation closer to the town because the beach here is very nice and uncrowded.. and being shallow some way out is safe as well. The beach is 3 minutes walk just over the road. On site you have a supermarket and wine shop. Satff are very good (especially compared to much of the service in Bulgaria!). Have a great trip and if you ned any more info let me know.

Fying from Edinburgh but divert to Tee-side first .Balkan

Hi, Is anyone else flying out the 1st August from Edinburgh with Balkan. I was on website yesterday lookin for flights for my friends to join me. No flights were available but other dates said that on our return dates up to the 15th AUG that the return flight would stop at Manchester to let passengers off for approx 60mins. I have checked the websie again and it is saying outward flights from Edinburgh will also pickup from Teeside from the 21st July. I just recieved my tickets 2 days ago and there was no mention of this. Anyone flying from edinburgh to Bourgas have any info.

Many Thanks.

|||

Geraldine, Looking at Bourgas Airport arrivals it does say your flight is via Teeside.

See Here.

Whats the price of things over in Bulgaria?

I%26#39;m heading over to Sunny Beach on the 20th with my family and have heard that the area is very cheap! Does anyone have info on how much i%26#39;d expect to pay for things like a meal in a restaurant, vodka and coke (don%26#39;t mind if it is local vodka) also a breakfast, no where fancy. x

|||

Compared with the UK or Spain, Bulgaria is very cheap. Mind you things have gone up this year but nevertheless still cheap.

A pint on the seafront will set you back about 3-4 lev, however, go further back to say Djanny%26#39;s, Condor, Bistro Billies, Faro and loads of others and it%26#39;s between 1-2 lev.

Local spirits/mixer is about 3 lev and a lot of bars do BOGOF offers all night. Cocktails are the same but about 7 lev.

A kebab is about 6 lev, meal with drinks at above restaurants about 25 lev.

Full pizza about 9 lev.

Dearest place in SB is probably McDonalds.

Beer in supermarkets ( for the balcony ) even cheaper again.

Toonman

|||

Full English at Djanny%26#39;s 6 lev (£2.50). Meal for two including drinks approx 35 lev (£15.00). Best restaurant around. Mamacitas twice this price.One other piece of advice - Aquapark is half price if you go at 3pm - doesnt close until 7pm. Go enjoy - we%26#39;ve just come back and booked up to return on 5th Sept - can%26#39;t wait.

|||

Hey just returned from SB

Its quite easy to tell the dear places from the others but I felt the standard of food was fantastic, marmacitas and the indian were my favourites and although the both came to about 150 lev INC drinks thats only about £60-£70 i thought that was great value for 4 people. Theres a fantastic choice of restaurants you could quite easily spend your whole holiday eating!!

I guess it depends how big your appetite is!!

Have a great time

|||

There is a difference between the food provided for cheaply and the food standard in the more expensive (by bulgarian standards)restaurants - we tried the cheap and still preferred to pay the extra for better standard - mamacita%26#39;s and felice - still a third of the price in UK. As with everywhere you get what you pay for!

|||

where in sunny beach is the indian just love a curry cheers

Virtually every bar has sky tv so you%26#39;ll be spoilt for choice.

Last year the beach bar right at the very bottom of the strip where it joins the promenade had at least 3 different matches on at the same time . You just took your pick.

Television In Bars

Hi, Been reading alot of reviews that a lot of bars have big screen televisions showing football. Do they only show football or can you catch up with British TV or watch Comedy Shows such as only fools and horses for example. (Hangover TV) lol.

|||

They only show football or other sports....I am afraid that you will have to stay at home if you want to watch British comedy.

|||

Oh well I better try to enjoy football or find another way to recover from a hangover.

Pomorie Hotel

Is it as bad as everyone is making out?

Please let me know!! What is the food really like? How long do you have to queue at the bar?

I%26#39;m going on the 27th July and very worried!!!

|||

sorry boothiel it is bad only one bar is all inclusive thats the lobby bar which is the furthest bar from the pool the pool bar isnt all inclusive neither are the other 5 bars .you can only get drinks in small plastic glassess and you wait ages 2 be served the food is shocking take money 2 eat out and watch valubels in your room the staff are light fingered on a plus the hotel is in a good position in the resort but can be a bit noisey and the rooms are red hot sorry 2 be negative but im only telling the truth enjoy

|||

Hi, just came back from SB yesterday (12/7), we did not stay at the Pomorie, but sat next to a couple on the flight home (Balkan Hols), who had stayed at this hotel and she said the food was awful, they were AI but had to eat out every day, also No Aircon and rooms on the front over look a large disco (LAZUR) which is very noisey until early hours. We did go along to that end of SB one night, to have a look around and at the Pomorie and Fenix hotels, as both are %26#39;late offers%26#39; with Balkan Hols, and we did not like the location at all, very noisy bars and generally tatty, but it is near the beach!!!

We went with Balkan Hols and stayed at the IVANA PALACE at the other (Western) end of SB, just off the main road behind the hotels Marvel and Victoria Palace. The IVANA is B%26amp;B, but hotel was lovely, large, modern, great pool, good location 5 min to beach and start of main prom, restaurants and bars etc, BUT nice and peacful at night as no big/noisey bars/discos near it.

Sorry to be negitive about the Pomorie, but there are far nicer hotels in SB and eating/drinking out is good and cheap, so why go AI when it may be rubbish? Hope you get sorted %26amp; enjoy SB, we did.

Ray.

polyusi hotel of horrors !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well just got back from the polyusi hotel in sb worst holiday of my life !!!!!!!!

the only good things about it were the weather and some friends we met

we stayed in the new appartment block which at first glance looks lovely but be warned 2 familys i knoe of were moved as the celing fell in on them one family were out on there balcony so luckly wer%26#39;nt hurt but another chap was laying in bed and it came down on his legs!!!!and required hospital treatment!!

in the new appartments there were 58 rooms sleeping either 2-3 or 4-5 adults and only 24 sunbeds round the pool!! we had to take it in turnes to put towels out buy 7 am or you got no bed for the day!!

these appartments are advertised as self catering but all you get is a microwave and a fridge %26amp; kettle not that you could cook anything as there is nothing to put food in to cook anyhow

one day we had no electric for 9 1/2 hours which i understand they cant help but it took me 5 hrs to get them to boil me my own water for the babys bottles it was only done when i told them i wanted my rep there!!

on the day we had no power i asked for a high chair to feed the baby and was told there was%26#39;nt one the waitress then walked off laughing and a young girl (13) went to fetch me one!!!!! i then had to cleen it before i could put her in it !!!

and they wouldnt let me have any hot water to warm the bottle even though they had it !!!

horrible horrible people !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there are no sun parosols around the pool but there are these wooden hut thingis i was told i couldnt sit there with the baby unless i ordered food (which is twice the price in the resort by the way)

i told them if they got a parosol for me i would move so they said the baby could stay there but i couldnt !!!!!!! as if!!!

(they said it would be ok for me to sit there for 5 --10 min whists she was fed n thats it!!!)

i refused to move so was glared at for the rest of the holiday and never got offered another cup of coffee again !!!!

sorry for rambling but i could go on all day

oh and to top it off room was burgaled the day before we came home so spent all the last night in police station!!!!!!!!

|||

hi juju really sorry to hear you had a terrible time at this hotel i am booked to go there in sept to the apartments but this has put me off think i will call first choice and asked to be moved cant believe there is no pots or anything to make a simple meal thats why people go self catering so they dont use all there spending money eating out several times a day .must have been someone who worked in hotel who broke into your room they would be the only ones with keys to get in .as for the roof falling in thats horrendous lucky someone wasnt killed i am really panicking now .gladyou left this report many thanks kate

|||

Wow you had a horrible holiday.

We stayed in the same hotel a couple of weeks ago but in the other side where we had b%26amp;b and no problems at all.

We were there when power went off as well but only for about 2 hours and it wasnt just our hotel it was quite a few places.

I would go back to Bulgaria but not to sunny beach as I like it more rural.

Forget the previous scaremongering

I have just arrived back from Sunny Beach after a fortnights holiday and I would like to reassure anyone who is heading there this Summer. You can ignore the scaremongering reviews that have been appearing in the forum we had a smashing holiday.

The weather was brilliant and we encountered no trouble what so ever. We were out most nights until well after 1am and althouigh we stayed at the Majestic in the Northern part of Sunny Beach we usually finished up at the Irish bar at the Neptune which is on the South side of Sunny Beach. We always walked back up the promenade strip to our hotel which is a good walk and we didn%26#39;t encounter any problems what so ever, we felt as safe as houses.

The prices have gone up since last year and with the weakness of the pound against the lev down aprox 20% from 07 it has cost us more but it is still good value for money. We were paying between 0.75 of a lev up to 3 levs for a large local beer with Carling costing 4 levs a pint.

We had a very dissapointing meal which wasn%26#39;t cheap at the Arizona Steak House and we did most of our eating at the Carriby Restaraunton on the sea front good food and very good value.

The Majestic hotel is a fabulous hotel but the evening meals were very dissapointing. The meats are overcooked and the veg is undercooked and after our first week we dined out and gave the hotel food a miss.

|||

Hi YorkshireMaz, Good to hear of another forum member thoroughly enjoying themselves and without any trouble.

I%26#39;m disappointed about the %26quot;Arizona%26quot; though as this was usually a good restaurant. Did you by chance go into %26quot;Scandals%26quot;, if so, whats it like?

Don%26#39;t forget to put a review of hotel on the site.

Toonman

|||

Hi All,

We are also just back from SB yesterday (Sat 12/7), after our first hol to Bul/SB. We really liked it and agree with the first post, as we were out late most nights on the main prom/strip and although there were a lot of young people (and some older ones like us 2) really enjoying themselves, we did not see any trouble or bother at all.

We stayed at the IVANA Palace just off main road behind the Marvel/Victoria Palace hotels (which are at north end of prom) and we often walked the length of the prom from Vic Palace to the start of main strip - Flower Street (?) %26amp; Kuban Hotel (can%26#39;t miss it, tower block), just past the Globus Hotel on the front.

It is much more lively/noisey at that end, whereas at the Vic Palace end there are bars/restaurants but generally a bit more sedate!

As in any big resort or home town you need to be careful, keep alert and watch your money. bag etc, BUT we never felt worried or threatened during the whole week, and it was VERY busy.

Enjoy your hol in SB we certainly did.

Ray

|||

P.S. to my previous post - Yes we went in Scandals bar which is on the prom just in front of the Arizona Steak Restaurant, it was not busy the night we popped in as most people were in the Arizona itself, but you can watch/hear the group (Sound Force?)plaqying at the Arizona from Scandals, which is more or less part of the same place. Scandals has a small central bar and nice (yellow) seating. It never looked busy when we passed (most evenings)and prices were same as other Prom bars (3 Lev for a beer). Nicest cocktails were at the bar next to the Bellvue hotel on the front, 2-4-1 cocktails all night (from the list on the board outside price about 7.20-7.50 Lev each (but you get 2!), and small beer about 2.50. Play good music, not too loud and staff very pleasant. It%26#39;s the bar with the blue lights along the bar fronr, NOT the Bellvue bar iteself (but you do use the hotel%26#39;s loos).

Ray

|||

Maybe not in the right topic, so apologies, but can anyone advise me where the Barcelo Royal Beach Hotel is in relation to the bars/restaurants? Are we talking 10-15 minutes walk from one end to the other?

Thanks as always.

|||

Hi Toonman we had thre or four decent meals (steaks) at the Arizona last year and although we were half board this year we decided to have a meal out at the Arizona on the strength of the food last year. I had the fillet steak 12 0z 40 levs %26amp; 8 oz 30 levs. The steak wasn%26#39;t very good at all. We were told they have an English chef this year. We might have just fell unlucky but as you know there are so many restaraunts in Sunny Beach the Arizona can%26#39;t aford to become complacent. We did have a lovely T Bone steak at Carribys. Excuse me for repeating myself the Majestic is a fabulous hotel but the evening meals were certainly not to my taste I would like to hear comments on the evening meals from anyone else who stayed at the Majestic.

Yes we did have a drink at Scandals which as Ray P said is a continuation to the front (beach side) of the Arizona. There are a few bars missing on the strip due to redevopment, the Village has gone along with the Boys to the Max bar. There are shop stalls where these bars were.

The haunyted house has moved from near the Star Reataraunt and the Northern McDonalds down into the centre of the resort.

A few bars have changed their name lookout for the Ugly Coyote a bar for the younger generation.

|||

Jimbo16 - If I am correct the Royal Beach Hotel is very near the beach front/prom and only minutes to the centre (Kuban Hotel/Flower St), so very near to all the bars, shops and restaurants. Also, I think it has it%26#39;s own shopping mall, which is advertised all over SB, but we didn%26#39;t go in. It was our first time to Bulgaria/SB and only went for a week, but really liked it and was more impressed than I expected I%26#39;d be.

Must visit nearby Nessebar, lovely old town, cobble streets, little cafes/restaurants (Fish dishes are a speciality). We got the local bus there for only 1 Lev each (took about 15 mins %26amp; bus very busy). Had a meal overlooking ther harbour. Got a water-taxi boat back from Nessebar harbour to the pier at the Victoria Palace hotel, cost 15 Lev each, took about 25 mins and very nice views of SB, beach front etc.

Other boats go to the Bourgas Beach hotel pier, for more central hotels.

Things to Do

Hi I am writing this to Toonman or anyone else who feel they can help this forum. What I feel is lacking on this forum for people is there is no section on %26quot;things to do%26quot; which I have always found extremely helpful and would benefit the people going to Sunny Beach. I have emailed tripadvisor about this and they wanted adressess and phone numbers of the attractions which I was unable to give except for Khan Tent. Have had no further response from them.

So wondered if any one else could help.

Thankyou and I feel its a great forum one of the best.

|||

Hi Chris, Have to agree with you it would be a good idea to have a %26quot;sticky %26quot; covering these things.

I%26#39;m going back in 6 weeks time and will try to get some up to date info on various things like aquapark, go karts , trips etc.

Will try tripadvisor also with my findings.

Any help/tips from anyone would be welcome.

What did you like and roughly any prices .

Toonman

|||

hi we had the same problem, we took 14 year old boy and just us 2 adults, what we did when we got there is looked on the boards out side the excursions office, then we compaired prices with what the rep was selling, sometimes it worked out cheaper to go with the rep, but we found loads of stuff t do when we got there, go carts worked out 10 pound for 10 mins but was well worth it, its out door track and husband said with the heat from sun and the engines he would have stuggled cause it was so hot with helmet on and all, we also went to the local bus depo,and hop on a bus to other places,so that took mostley all day, after a walk round and dinner, all i can say is its out there so go make ur hoilday and explore!! trace

Hi All, My holiday at sunnybeach is self catering so will be eating out most nights. I was wondering is there plenty of Take-away food places open at the end of a night out, to where we can grab something to eat to take back to the apartment and any recommemdations to what is good.

Many Thanks.

|||

Hi don%26#39;t think it will be a problem. The Bali supermarket between Bisser apartments and Diamond Hotel is open 24hrs and do take away foods and will heat it for you and food was good.

|||

Yes, thee are loads of places open late at night to get a take-away.There are quiet a few McDonalds but these tend to be slightly more expensive compared to the prices here.(Still hard to resist though!)

There are also stands that do kebabs,chips,pizza ect.Dont worry,you wont go hungry :)

Visiting St VLas

Hi, We are planning on visiting St Vlas as heard its a very nice place. Could anyone tell me the best way to get there from Sunnybeach such as a bus and approx cost of travel to and from there. Also what time the last bus is back to Sunnybeach from St Vlas and can anyone recommend a nice place for a meal. I will be Staying at Robinson Gardens apartments so dont know if there is a bus stop near the apartment so were would I get a bus to St Vlas.

Many Thanks.

Geraldine

|||

Hi Geraldine, The local bus stops on the main road just outside the Efir Apartments on otherside of the road, not far from Taxi rank.( reckon 2-3 min walk )

It will cost 1 lev per person( pay on the bus )

I think the last bus is about 11.30pm from there, but not 100% sure.

You will find some small, but nice restaurants up in the village square.

( remember to watch your bags, especially if a nice old woman tries to sit beside you. )

Thanks again Toonman your a total star.

Any Replica Formula 1 Shirts/Jackets !!

I am going on holiday to SB,staying at the Yavour Palace.

Was wondering if they sell F1 shirts and how much they are, as Greece are mad about them. I bought them for about 12 pounds. Really good value and quality.

Iam going 1st August and back the 15th. Any info

Cheers

|||

If I remember rightly on the main road just around the corner, to the left of Hotel Kuban, there was a shop selling Formula 1 gear.

Cheers Toonman.

Bisser Apartments

We are going to Bisser apartments in June and wandered if anyone has any information on these. Also would like to do the 2 day trip to Istanbul and would like opinions whether to go by boat or bus.

Thank you for input

|||

did anyone ever get back to you about these apartments.were going in july but cant find any reviews.any info much appreciated

|||

I have not heard of these apts are they located in sunny beach or outside of sunny beach?

|||

Hi i checked them out. Seem grand. THey are on this website www.balkanholidays.co.uk

In their brochure also.

Hope this help :)

|||

thats where i saw these apartments.the only problem was there was no mention of a safe for money etc.thats what is putting me off,from what ive read i might need one

|||

Hi just got back today from Sunny Beach and will be writing a review on the Bisser Apartments.

Will say they are new this season with Balkan Holidays and letting their apartments so still setting things up. They have put in safe%26#39;s which are in reception and you place a numbered code in which we were told was from 4 to 6 digits but in reality could only be three. They have internet access 4 lev%26#39;s for an hour. 24 hour reception. Staff are all pleasant rooms clean and tidy. Had fresh linen twice a week. Roomy apartments with small kitchen with microwave, kettle, coffee maker, small fridge and a 1 or 2 electric ring. Would say we had no easy chair to sit on and small stools for the balcony.

When we first arrived was given a room with an enclosed balcony which a lot seem to be but next day were readily moved to open balcony.

Any further questions will be willing to answer.

|||

thanks for that chris.hope you had a nice holiday.was just a bit worried about leaving valuables lying around so youve set my mind at rest.i usually go to turkey but feel like a change was a bit concerened about beggars and security in the hotel but it seems ok.look foward to your review

|||

Hi there, i%26#39;m also going to Bisser Apartments in July.

What you said was a hand, but just wondering, did you put your passport in the safes at reception?

I%26#39;ve heard that passports are a big %26quot;market%26quot; in Bulgaria, and in the chance we get our room broken into (which with my mates is likely!), I wouldn%26#39;t want to lose my passport.

cheers

Dave, Falkirk

|||

Hi, yes we did leave our passports in the safe. There is always someone in the reception area, and evening and night have a security guy so felt completely safe at doing this.

Have a good Hol.

|||

Cheers mate, appreciated. We%26#39;ll most likely do the same.

Cannot wait now! :D

|||

Bisser Apartments are right in the centre of SB, next door to the Diamond Hotel. Good exchange opposite side of the main road called STRING, better rate than CROWN.We were getting 2.42 last week compared to 2.37 at Crown exchanges. 24hour BALLI supermarket just behind the apartments.

Hope we enjoy your hols.

Live Music

Hi heading to SB in august for one week, was just wondering was there any good pubs where you could listen to some live music before you head out to the nightclubs. Also which nightclubs are the best in SB. Thanks

|||

Here is a link to the clubs in SB.

www.disco.bg/en/search_results_en.php…

Lazur, Orange, Mania reckoned ok.

Here is club Orange website with live web cam

http://www.orangedisco.net/

Toonman

|||

Hi, I have just recently retured from Sunny Beach %26amp; I used to go to hear live music in the nights there.

The Funny Pub has a very good live band that play til 12. They are great,they sing everything from Amy Winehouse-Valerie to Whiskey in the jar!!!

Also,some another pubs with live bands include The Spider Bar %26amp; The Central Bar.Enjoy! :)

|||

Thanks both can%26#39;t wait to go

Just back from 2 weeks in Sunny Beach at Oasis hotel.

Firstly thanks to previous help and responses to our questions we posted.

Secondly if you are having any doubts about going to Sunny Beach, don%26#39;t! We never felt unsafe and despite some negative posts it is a wonderful place to holiday and obviously comes with all the warnings of any foreign holiday.

We are a 31 and 28 yo couple and stayed at the Grand Oasis. It was a very nice hotel, very friendly and ideally situated. Pool sunbeds - no chance! unless you are up at 7am, however as we left they implemented a new system which may hinder the germans! However we went for our preferred option of the beach. 6 lev each for sunbed, big waves and only a few friendly jelly fish! Bit of seaweed which washes away with the waves! We would recommend the quieter beach area near heaven hotel, la bamba and the fat cat away from the main areas or the strip or victoria place.

We would recommend the following restaurants

Jupiter, Djannys, Condor (not Condor Hotel!) Faro, %26amp; Malina for the cheaper options.

Mamacitas, Chilli Peppers, Vagabond, %26amp; Felice which were slightly more expensive but still cheaper than UK.

We ate chicken at some of these restaurants and it was fine and cooked the same as in UK.

We would recommend the local bulgarian red wine, it was very nice wherever we drunk it! Drinks vary in price best to just try any bar. Near the sea and main strip you will pay more!

Supermarkets are very cheap for local spirits and wine/beer.

Exchange rate is currently 2.36-2.40 at most crown exchanges and hotels.

Shop around for clothes we found the same items varied in price and were cheaper near djannys in the market area. Football tops vary in price and quality, you can pick up a good fake, but without detail or accurate logos for around 20-30 levs, or 50 levs for the exact replica! Which is still much cheaper than UK!

We flew with Balkan holidays from Bristol, they WERE charging people for excess baggage on the outward journey! anything over 21/22 kgs, irrelevant of the hand luggage.

We went to the blue mountains, (chair lift is extra at 8 lev each and a must) nessebar (caught a boat from pier and returned by local bus) and the VIP cruise on a catamaran all were excellant and we enjoyed very much.

Weather was great, 13 days of sunshine, one day overcast and a slight down pour which was actually quite fun!

Just so you know at the airport, the duty free is in Euros not levs!

Hope that is of help to someone and feel free to ask any questions.

Mark %26amp; Liz.

|||

Hi Mark, Very glad to hear you have had a lovely holiday. I%26#39;ve stayed in the Oasis on 2 occasions and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Toonman

|||

Good report Mark and Liz. Can you tell me a bit more about the excursions ye took ie cost and where u booked and where they any good.

Thanks a mill

Caroline

|||

We booked the catamaran and blue mountains excurisons through our balkan rep. They were about £40 and £30 each respectivly. There are many other excursions as well. The Balkan office is attached to the hotel globus. I am sure anyone can book on these. You can book these at independent agents around the resort as well. We enjoyed these very much.

We arraned the trip to Nessebar ourselves, just go to the main pier and wait for a boat, usually every 15 mins or you canbus it from the bus stops which are very easy to find.

Restaurants in Sunny beach

Hello! I am planning on going to Sunny Beach in August. What kind of food does Bulgaria specializes in and what are the good fish restaurants or any restaurants?

|||

Bulgaria specializes in Bulgarian food.

Top of the list is tomatoes and cucumbers. I doubt you will be able to have a meal without sighting these fellas. Fried meats of all types are also very popular, especially pork.

In general, there are many many good dishes, and if you%26#39;re going to Sunny Beach, it will probably be easier to find international restaurants than to find an authentic Bulgarian one.

|||

Have heard lots of good reports about Djannys in Sunny Beach both on this forum and from Bulgarian friends of ours - will be trying there myself this year!

For fish restuarants personally I would head round to Old Nessebar - bit pricier than SB but there are some lovely places to eat and fantastic fish to try.

There are two fish restaurants I would recommend in Nessebar - can%26#39;t remember its exact name but is something like %26quot;Kaptinsky%26quot; - when you get off the bus near the harbour (or boat) rather than heading up into the town through the ancient walls follow the road round past the %26quot;market%26quot; area, just before the road bends round to the left there are some steps going up towards an ancient church. The restaurant is just up there on the left. Alternatively there is what looks like a %26quot;shack%26quot; just before these steps which actually serves nice fish caught by the owner that day - I%26#39;ve known this referred to as Captains although there are no signs (at least there weren%26#39;t last year).

|||

Djanny%26#39;s was our favourite again this year. Great food, great service and so much cheaper than the restaurants on or near the beach front. Djannys is very busy at night with both locals and tourists.

|||

got to agree with above posts djannys also when we were there last year we found atol did tasty food with good service and value for money happy hols

|||

We ate at this restaurant last July and didnt rate it very much.When we saw the big queue outside we thought it would be very good,the food we had was ok but nothing more than that.We were a family or four with kids aged12 and 14 and we were shown 2 a very small table and when we managed to get are order in only 2 arrived after about 20 minutes the other meals arrived.We ate at Fat Cats and Hendersons but favoured The Watermill which was on the beach and had lovely views,the staff were very friendly and the price was very good.

|||

for good fish you have to go to the old town of nessebar .romantica which is on the right side is the best one

the red harp is the best place to eat and drink in the new town of nessebar .the owner is irish and he is the one that dose all the cooking, great place

Toonman,

do you no if u can visit other hotels for entertainment as it looks like the hotel efir does%26#39;nt

have any entertainment and with 3 children i dont want to be out till the early hours around the main strip,id b very grateful if u could advise.

cheers

andy(redjen)

|||

Andy, We have in the past wandered into various hotels to see whats on, especially during the very hot hours. The Iberostar for one does have shows on every night but that is about a 15 minute walk away.

We were stopped going into the Rui Helena hotels by security but from what I hear this year they are even searching their bags for food and drink. May be 5* but it sounds like a prison camp.

I always believe that as long as you are paying for drinks any place would be happy to have you.

The Arizona , not far from Victoria Palace has live group on as does the Neptune Bar, next to Iberostar.

How old are the children?

Toonman

|||

Also worth remembering that a lot of the restaurants have entertainment as well, for those nights you just fancy a change from the hotel food.

Wendy

|||

hi we go june 20th-4th july my husband myself and our little girl whos 9 been to golden sands numerous times but never to the nympha,we are in north wales about 20mins from chester

|||

Hi,

We go the week after you, 27th June - 11th July. We%26#39;re spending one week at the Nympha and one week on a sailing yacht on the Black Sea.

We%26#39;ll have to arrangements closer to the date to meet up for a drink during our first week if you like. Looking forward to it now.

Wendy

|||

will do

|||

wendy have you been to bulgaria before

|||

Hi lalWales,

No, we%26#39;ve not been to Bulgaria before, we thought we%26#39;d have a short haul flight for a change this year, as we%26#39;ve done long haul for the past few years. We like to combine a beach holiday with something different every year, that%26#39;s why we are doing the Black Sea Cruise for the second week. We%26#39;ve done the gulet cruises in Turkey a couple of times and enjoyed them, so thought we%26#39;d try some different scenery this year. Where about have you stayed in Bulgaria before.

Wendy

|||

been to golden sands l;oads of times always stayed at different hotels though its really cheap to eat and drink out and the shoppings great

iberostar sunny beach

can any-one advise on taking money to bulgaria

is it best 2 get levs in england?

take sterling and change it there?

or just use a debit card when there

many thanks

|||

The very best deal is with a Nationwide Flex account debit card. NO charges whatsoever, and the best rate going ( currently 2.50 ) All other debit cards charge for taking money out and add a fee ( up to £5 for £100 ).

Best take a few lev to tide you over (£50 worth, current rate in UK about 2.25 ). Then take sterling £20/£10 notes in a clean,unmarked or torn condition and change them at any of the banks or CROWN Exchanges ( No others ). Current rate at banks 2.43

If you are in the Iberostar there are banks/ATM%26#39;s about 2 mins away opposite the Hotel Kuban.

Toonman

Thanks alot Toonman you%26#39;ve been a great help

Emerald Paradise Apartments

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has booked the Emerald Paradise Apartments for this year? There is a group of 12 of us going in July and I am beginning to get worried that the apartments won%26#39;t be ready on time! The property website keeps pushing the date back!

thanks

LYnn

|||

Hi

Can I ask did you stay at those apartments and how they were?

|||

Judging by these photographs they look ready as its not an %26quot; artists Impression %26quot;.

Hi

I would really appreciate it ...Thanking you in advance

Kind Regards

If Anyone wants some pictures of this comlpex then drop me an email

|||

Lynn when are you going over to Bulgaria

|||

We are going to these apartments on the 4th August 2 families for two weeks...

Thank you Craig for the photos it made my mind up to book ....

Will let you all know how we get on!!!!!

|||

Hello all....thanks for all the posts! I have only just realised that I never updated my new email address on tripadvisor so I didn%26#39;t realise there were so many replies!

I am going over on Friday! Concorde sent on the pictures since I posted my last comment and they look lovely! The only thing is that the pool bar won%26#39;t be ready because the builders didn%26#39;t get it finished on time but it shouldn%26#39;t be too much of a problem!

I will let you all know how I get on and hopefully post some photos!

Thanks

Lynn

|||

Thats a shame about the pool bar ,it looked like it was going to be quite a big place too.Apparently its illegal to do any work in summer in Bulgaria I guess it was too tight to finish it.Well i dont suppose they will object to having your home made coktails by the pool LOL. Tell them to do the babrby for you on the roof !

sunny dreams aparthotel sunny beach bulgaria

I have booked 2 weeks from 25th july and wonder if anyone can give me advice or info on the hotel and the area. We are self catering so food isn,t a big issue though i would like to eat out some of the time. We are more interested in entertainment and shopping!!

|||

Depends on what type of entertainment you%26#39;re looking for. Clubs,bars,live bands?

There are shops all over selling everything from T-Shirts to Leather coats, jeans,shoes,jackets.

For real up market stuff go into the shopping mall in the Royal Beach Complex on artist street, opposite the hotel Kuban.

Here is a map of the resort.

sunnybeachmap.com/sunny_map_eng/3d_map_eng.p…

Sunny dreams is in a quiet part of the resort( on the map scroll left and its near the outer edge of the resort.) Still plenty of bars etc nearby , especially on opposite side of the road. About a 15-20 min walk to the actual resort centre.

Toonman

|||

there is 2 big supermarkets - 1 next door to sunny dreams and opposite. very good for self catering.

there is a brillent put - THE REAL - about 200 metres past sunny dreams - pints art 1.40 lev (70c) and the food is very good.

shopping is a lot cheaper if you stay on the same side of the main road as sunny D. if you walk past the bus depo, you will find a lot of cheap stall selling similar to the main resort but for less. enjoy

|||

thank you all for your help. I love live music and i,ve been reading all the comments. Thank you toonman for the map. Will i be able to buy gold in bulgaria? I,m getting married next year and hoped i might find an unusual wedding ring.

|||

You can buy gold but please only use the bone fide jewellers and not some stall type shop.

hi everyone, any 1 know if the perfume is cheap as my mum would like to know

Whatever you do don%26#39;t buy it off a stall. Very poor copies.

Get it in the airport or a proper shop in Bourgas.

Toonman

|||

Yes the perfume is cheap on the stalls but it is so FAKE! I wouldnt advise you to buy it there as they are very bad copies.I tested D%26amp;G light blue and it smelt nothing like the real one whatsoever!

However,there are some places where you can buy the real deal, like chemists,the duty free shop in the airport or even on the plane itself.

|||

To Gorgeousbut grumpy.

Is the perfumes in the chemists alot cheaper than back home. Was going to get perfume at Edinburgh airport but might not bother.

Crime in sunny beach

Hi everyone,

I am due to go to SB in august for 2 weeks and have been really looking forward to it but all these postings about crime and muggings etc are really starting to scare me.

Im not a silly person and understand just like anywhere if you dont take steps to be safe and keep your belongings safe or you are at risk from crime this happens everywhere but is SB as bad as everyone is making out??? for example people crowding round you and mugging you etc and the police not helping.... cos if someone tried to mug me i would fight back and probably try and deck them one, which raises another point what are the police like over there as i will not let someone try and steal my stuff i would fight back and wandered how the police would handle that or do they just turn a blind eye to everything that goes on???

As i say im just really concerned that there is going to be all this crime and if something happend we are left in a forgieng country with no one really giving a sh/*t???

|||

Sarah, If you go thru%26#39; all the postings on this and other Bulgarian forums you will find a lot more positive reports than negative ones.

Yes crime does occur in Sunny Beach, as it does in most holiday resorts, however,the chances of you being one of the statistics is very small providing you look after yourself and your possessions. Clearly from your posting you are aware of that.

Quite a few of the negatives this year are from people who have been %26quot;done%26quot; with the bike taxis, despite the fact numerous people on this forum have been warning future travellers about them.

Oxford St. in London is rife with pickpockets and thieves but it hasn%26#39;t stopped people shopping there, we just become more vigilant and security conscience.

From someone who has been going to Bulgaria for a number of years, without any incidents the best advice I can give is,

Try not to walk alone at night back to your hotel.

Do not walk about showing off loads of gold chains, camera%26#39;s or camcorders. Take a plain old plastic bag to hide them in. Try not to stand out like a rich tourist, and remember, Bulgaria is a poor country in comparison to the UK with a large gypsy population and it is they who give it a bad press not the normal hard working Bulgarian.

Hope you end up having a lovely holiday without any cause for concern. Looking forward to mine in September.

Hi

Just back Monday and we had a great time a party of 8 stayed at the Laguna Park plus Trakia Plaza

People are just trying to advise you what happened to them- as some folk let their guard down as they are on holiday.I did not feel unsafe

I witnessed lots of police wondering around and I was in Nessebar plus the bazaar no prob

There are beggers but there are few compared to city centres in the UK

It is common sense take a daily amount of cash with you - if people invite you to come into their bar whatever and you don,t fancy it just say maybe later

They are not offended in any way- its just their job

Have fun

|||

Hi Sarah, i have just got back from Sunny Beach, a brilliant 2 wks, as at home you have to be carefull, but we have been going to S/B for four years, and we have never encountered any of the things you fear, a friend of mine has been going for 22yrs!! which i guess says something.. we spent a lot of time in the corner pub, its next to the meridian hotel, if you go in tell kosta (kareoke man) hello from Diane again (thats me) go and enjoy your holiday, they really are very nice people.. x enjoy

|||

as long as u carefull you will be ok its no worse than any other place where are u staying

can anyone recommend any restaurants

Hi, going to Nessebar in August, can anyone recommend any restaurants in Nessebar or Sunny Beach for 2 adults %26amp; two kids (14 %26amp; 10).

Also does any one know of any bars etc. that have suitable entertainment for kids.

Any help would be great.

Bev

|||

Hi, Just got back from Sunny Beach and would highly recommend Carriby which is on the sea front in Sunny Beach. Fairly cheap with enormous menu catering from Chinese-Mexican-Steaks. Also would recommend thye Ship for the Shark there. Very cheap and fantastic food. Hope this helps.

|||

Hi, would also recommend the Carriby excellent fish platter. Also the Venera steak house just before the Royal Beach Mall. Then the Jupiter steak house opposite. In Nessebar the Vega restaurant views of the sea.

|||

Definitly Djannys! It%26#39;s in Sunny Beach.The food is great,and so are the prices! Its so popular that we had to sometimes wait outside for a minute or 2 for a table.We didnt mind waiting because it was worth it for the food %26amp; the staff are friendly too.

Another place we liked in Sunny beach was The Star Inn.Lovely food,reasonable prices %26amp; the staff were very helpful! Oh %26amp; get a free alcoholic shot after your meal as well, Enjoy!

|||

Just returned from 2 weeks in Sunny Beach,the best night we had there was spent at a restaurant called JUZHNI NOSHTI the entertainment was brilliant the food very good and its cheap.There were 4 in our party,me (45)the wife(??)my mum and dad(both in their 60%26#39;s).It is VERY popular so book in advance phone no.00359 554 2851.Its close to the RIU Helena Sands hotel.Hope this helps

|||

you should try the red harp in new nessebar the chef is irish and caters for people who want their food to taste the same as at home.

very handy if your kids dont take to bulgarian food.

they also show films during the day for kids

|||

Another yes for Carriby and the Star Inn. In both restaraunts the food is good and represent excellent value for money.

The restaraunts are very near to each other both on the beach strip in the Northern side of Sunny Beach.

|||

In Nessebar try the red Harp in the new part, definitely worth a visit...In Sunnybeach I would recommend Djannys,the Condor and the Iris for good food at cheap prices but if you are prepared to pay prices similiar to home try Mamacitas beside the Kuban hotel really delicious food.

|||

if u go 2 sunny beach try the forest hut steak house near hotel meridian its got a kids play area inside near the dance floor and they have a group singing the food there is fantastic

|||

Hi, were just back after 2 week stay and would recommend Chilli Peppers on flower street (Western theme resturant, live music and can can girls)! Carriby was good, however one of the waiters took it upon himself to take his own 10 lev tip!! however other waiters were very nice. We had a full english breakfast at the Star inn, which must have been cooked the day before and microwaved the following day, as I had never had green eggs before!!! La Bamba was also good, The prices are a lot more dear this year for meals, but comparable to uk prices, we were paying approx 100 lev for 4 people with drinks.

Pancakes excellent, kebabs good and hot doughnuts very tasty!!!

Hope that helps

summer dreams apartments

Hi we are going to Summer Dreams Apartments on Monday 21st they look really nice and the reviews are good, but can anyone tell me if the have an iron to save taking a travel iron with us. Thanx Abbiedabbie

|||

most of these apartments are privatley owned so it all depends what the owner has decided to put in their apartment, for instance we have 2 in seadreams one has a washing machine the other does not at the moment so it all depends on the owners

|||

Thanx will probably take one just in case. Just trying to keep the cases light.

The biggest club Lazur is bout 15min walk away but Disco Orange is just around the corner. Hope this helps!

Resonably priced hotel in Sunny Beach for 1st timers please?

Hi,

Me (28) and boyfriend (31) are considering going to Sunny Beach next year, but usually book in this one.

To save some cash we were going to stay at the Polyusi hotel self catering or B%26amp;B, but have just read that the facilities in the self-catering were terrible, one persons room was robbed and one of the ceilings collapsed in on someone so it doesnt sound very pleasant or safe.

I was therefore wondering where the hardened Sunny Beach lot go, Toonman etc?

Price wise about £1000-£1200 would be ideal either self catering or B%26amp;B.

If people are suggesting places could they also provide who they travelled with and whether there was a transfer included and if not how they managed the transfer themselves.

Many thanks in advance.

Bex.

|||

we have our own apartments over their and arrange our flights ourselves and also we have a contact in Pomorie who does transfers

The only other place i have stayed at is Iberostar which is half board

Sue

www.seadreams.sm4.biz

|||

Hi Bex, Like Sue I have stayed in the Iberostar Half Board and it is excellent, including food.

So good in fact I should be back in 6 weeks time.

There are a lot of new self catering places and Balkan Holidays cover a lot, and as Sue says she has an apartment there which may be for rent.

Why not look at the Grand Hotel Oasis on a B%26amp;B basis. Nice hotel ( crap dinner, good breakfast )hence why we went B%26amp;B. Very central in the resort for all amenities, beach, shopping, bars clubs.

You could get a 14 day stay for about £500 or less.

Our stay in the Iberostar this year 14 nights HB works out at under £550 with First Choice and I, along with loads of others reckon this is the best hotel in the resort.( see holiday reviews on it )

Anything else, fire away.

Toonman

|||

I loved the Iberostar it is a first class hotel, the reason i chose my apartments was because it is close enough to the beach and resort but far enough away so i cant hear the night clubs, the supermarket is 2 minutes away and their is a restaurant on site if i cannot be bothered going out. It has also got a washing machine, so i can do my washing before i come home so i have nothing to do when i get home
