Sorry to hear of your bad experience. It is always advisable to use a hotel safe when on holiday to keep money and any expensive jewellry you must take with you on holiday. This advise would be the same wherever you go, not just in Sunny Beach.
It is also not a good idea to go on the beach on night, as your 18 year old nephew did.
As a regular visitor to Bulgaria and Sunny Beach I have never heard or seen reports similar to these. Also I can assure you that the quality of the gold sold in the shops there is excellent and at a fraction of the price in UK.

Dear Bell101,
Can I just say that I was quite worried about some of the comments made some weeks back but I think when travelling anywhere you have to have an open mind and be very careful. Many of the regulars on this forum replied to my concerns with reassurance, to which I am very grateful. I am so much looking forward to our trip to Sunny Beach next June 09 (doh). However, saying that I remember some years back going to Benidorm with an ex-partner and encountering muggings then. My Dad has a place in Fuengirola, Spain and the place has gypsies, drugs coming over from Morroco reportedly trying to deal on the beach etc, but its still a nice place to go but you have to be careful. Personally, I haven%26#39;t worn jewellery abroad when I go and tend to be careful about what I take etc.
Common sense really.

Toonman has been giving sound advice to people.
Regarding safety
It is equally important not too panic.
We came back on 7 July and my husband walked around like Jimmy Saville!!
So I think if you keep your wits about you you will be fine- these things also happen at home ie
muggings, house broked into
Go and make the most of your holiday.

I am surprised that everyone is so shocked about this. I went to SB 2 years ago and got robbed and nrly everyone o have spoke to on that holiday or since knows someone who got robbed or was robbed themselves.
That said I am still going bak in 2 weeks but will keep my wits about me!
