tlate night ransport from Sofia downtown to airport.

Hi,

I%26#39;m going to stay in Bulgaria for about 2weeks. One thing I haven%26#39;t figured out yet is how to get to the Sofia airport from downtown at night. Since I got a flight at 6 in the morning, I have to get to the airport by 4:00 am. I%26#39;d appreciate any advice for a safe transport to the airport. Thanks.

Hi, Maestrina.

I had the same problem for an early morning BA flight and got the agency I booked the hotel room with to arrange transfers. You must check enerything religiously if done this way because the standard of admin is often very different than in the west. Your hotel could perhaps book a reputable taxi firm (OK are apparently good)to meet you at this time but double and triple check. Good luck and let us know how you got on

Hi,

I%26#39;ve just got back from Sofia 2 days ago. Your best bet is to get your hotel to order you a taxi. If the hotel is good it will know a reasonably uncrooked firm (OK taxis are one)and should have an account with them. The airport is only c.10 km east of the city centre so should not cost you a great deal. Whatever you do, do not flag one down in the street as you will more than likely get badly ripped off - overcharging of foreigners is endemic. We travelled from the centre to the airport on Sunday and it cost 8.45 lev but it will cost more at night. I%26#39;d also advise that you get your hotel to arrange a pickup from the airport. This can be risky in terms of cost as they always start the meter from when they start out and not from when the journey begins. When we arrived there was a slight delay so 14 lev was already on the meter and the whole cost came to 25 lev (about £10). However, another couple in our hotel picked up a taxi at the airport and were charged 30 euros.

I%26#39;d also advise when in Sofia do not use a taxi unless it is absolutely necessary. Most drivers haven%26#39;t got a clue where things are and constantly stop for directions, which all boosts the costs. Also it has been known for drivers to have a knobble button attached to the meter which dramatically speeds it up. I think this happened to us in Plovdiv as the same journey once cost us 2.3 lev and then 10 lev.

A good guide to get when in Sofia is the %26#39;Sofia in your Pocket%26#39; which can be found at www.inyourpocket.com

Sofia is a laid back city and very cheap so enjoy.
